About

SQUIGGLE-1-04.png

Katie is a New York City-based director, producer, and theatre commentator. A native New Yorker, Katie got the theatre bug early: at three years old, she cried during the intermission for a production of Peter Pan, concerned that the performance had ended. Clearly, not much has changed. After graduating cum laude from Princeton University, where she majored in English, minored in Theatre, and produced theses on both Jane Austen and Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun, Katie began working professionally in theatre, making her Off-Broadway debut in the critically acclaimed revival of Fiorello!.

She’s since worked at theaters like Berkshire Theatre Group, Barrington Stage Company, City Center Encores!, Ancram Opera House, the Mint Theater Company, and Goodspeed Opera House. She is currently the Associate Director of the Annie National Tour, which played a monthlong engagement at Madison Square Garden, featuring EGOT-winner Whoopi Goldberg. She’s also the Associate on the Broadway-aimed Anne of Green Gables musical (also directed by Jenn Thompson), and she’s been the associate for other directors like Christian Borle and John Rando.

In January 2025, Katie directed and produced Forrest Malloy’s play Nina at Theaterlab, which enjoyed a critically acclaimed, sold-out run. Both New York Magazine and The New York Times gave the play glowing reviews, and her directing was singled out as “confident and precise” by Exeunt and “tightly directed” by The Brooklyn Rail.

In 2020, Katie started a theatre interview show, first with the help of Berkshire Theatre Group, and then relaunched it on her own as “Call Time with Katie Birenboim,” now available on Apple, Spotify, or anywhere you enjoy podcasts. She also began writing feature pieces for Arts Journal, a “digest of some of the best arts and cultural journalism in the English-speaking world.”

In addition to all of this, Katie graduated from NYU’s Performing Arts Administration master’s program, where she received the “Distinguished Graduate” award for outstanding academic performance and service. Since, then, she’s also directed a sold-out, “elevated concert version” of The Secret Garden at Berkshire Theatre Group, co-produced Eamon Foley’s dance-forward reimagining of Sunday in the Park with George at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center, and directed a festival of new, Jewish Plays for the Jewish Plays Project.
