Directing

Katie directed and produced Forrest Malloy’s Nina at Theaterlab in January/February 2025. The play received glowing reviews (“It’s only playing through February 9, so run. Run!” from New York Magazine and Laura Collins-Hughes at The New York Times called it “delicious…graceful…funny… [and] heart-breaking”), but her work has been specifically singled out. Loren Noveck at Exeunt wrote, “Birenboim’s confident and precise direction brings out strong, nuanced performances in all five actors; the play shines in small emotional details that can I think be credited to Birenboim as much as to Malloy,” Ron Fassler at TheaterPizzazz wrote “Shout out to director Kate Birenboim and her ability to craft such precision work from her cast,” and Billy McEntee wrote about “Birenboim’s tightly directed production” in The Brooklyn Rail.

She is also the Associate Director of the Annie National Tour, currently playing a monthlong engagement at Madison Square Garden featuring EGOT-winner Whoopi Goldberg. She is also the Associate Director of the Broadway-aimed Anne of Green Gables musical (both for her mentor, Jenn Thompson). In July 2023, Katie directed The Secret Garden at Berkshire Theatre Group, and in August 2024 she directed an evening of short, new Jewish plays for the Jewish Plays Project.
